ON a day that seemed to get hotter and hotter and that reminded everyone that the hot season was on its way here, 29 golfers fought through the heat and humidity in the bi-monthly Samui Golf & Sports Center golf tournament held at Santiburi Golf and Country Club in Maenam.

As always, the good chaps at Profmil Co. Ltd. were the main sponsors of the event. Without their help, the tournaments would have a much harder time existing.

A rain shower came out of nowhere during the closing holes, making it just that much more difficult for Robin Mulholland to hold off a chasing pack of golfers looking to take over his lead.

In the end he successfully held them off and took home the beautiful first prize glass and laser engraved trophy supplied by Profmil.

Robin was playing off a handicap of five which was reduced to four after shooting two birdies and nine pars. His great play netted him 33 points and, along with the trophy, received a gift voucher for Sala Samui’s Pangea restaurant in Choengmon.

Second place was closely contested by Karim Salamatian, George Rankin and Steve Jaggard because they all scored 32 points.

In the end, however, Karim just barely won as it came down to him scoring more points on the front nine using the Nomads handicap system.

The nearest-to-the pin competition on Hole 6 was won by Peter Adams who hit his ball within just 40 centimeters from the cup.

For Hole 12 Ken Quartermaster placed his ball a not as impressive 2.80 meters from the pin.

Either way, both players won nice gifts from Samui Golf and Sports Center.

Robin Mulholland also came away with the longest-drive prize by smashing his ball 300 yards, thus winning him an extra prize.

“To win two competitions on the same day, especially with one of them being the main prize, feels really good,” said Robin.

“I know it was hot today, and now is the time to separate the real players from the wannabe players. As the days become hotter and hotter it makes concentration more and more difficult. Only the strong mental players will do well through the adverse weather,” said Greg Lester, one of the event’s coordinators.

The next competition date is March 25. For more information, contact Greg or his brother Alex at 077-246191.
