RESIDENTS of Koh Phangan have complained about the allegedly widespread use of drugs during the famous Full Moon and other parties held regularly on their island. They specifically cited the parties that take place around Bantai village, halfway between Thongsala and Haad Rin (where the Full Moon Party is held).

The other big events that they claimed attract large crowds and where narcotics and other illegal substances allegedly proliferate are the Shiva-Moon, Half-Moon, Black-Moon and Jungle Parties. These parties usually run from 9 p.m. until noon the following day, leaving many villagers sleepless all night because of the noise and loud music.

Some island people said they could not stand seeing individuals high on drugs walking aimlessly on the street. The parties have also resulted in some fatalities and injuries resulting from what the residents alleged as drug-related accidents, robberies and house break-ins.

The concerned residents have asked authorities to enforce the law that mandates the closing of entertainment establishments by 2 a.m. just like in other major tourist areas in Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Samui. They demanded that this rule be strictly enforced especially on entertainment venues that are within and near residential areas.

They feared that if authorities don't act immediately, the situation would worsen and get out of control.
